SUMMARY:Impact & Significance of the EU CBAM on Businesses in Singapore and Southeast Asia with DG Taxud
DESCRIPTION:In October 2023\, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) entered into its transitional phase. A mechanism that aims to incentivise exporting countries to decarbonise their carbon-intensive goods entering the EU market (cement\, iron and steel\, aluminium\, fertilisers\, electricity and hydrogen in preliminary stages)\, will shape the existing trade dynamics and accelerate sustainable development worldwide. Strong trade ties between Europe and Southeast Asia suggest the countries are expected to see an impact – some minimal and some more severe due to their significant export of goods covered under CBAM. \nThis webinar\, a second in the series of events on Carbon Pricing\, will explore: \n\nThe mechanics of CBAM from the transitional phase to its implementation in 2026\nHow companies can mitigate risks and assess opportunities\nBroader implications for the region and existing and potential domestic carbon policy frameworks

SUMMARY:Webinar: A Pathway to Circular Economy - Mass Balance Approach
DESCRIPTION:The world is producing twice as much plastic waste as two decades ago\, yet only 9% is recycled. Growing the circular economy – where products and materials are kept in circulation through processes that include reuse\, recycling and composting – is needed to stop waste from being produced in the first place and to tackle climate change and other global challenges such as biodiversity loss and pollution. \nTo fully unlock the potential of a circular economy\, we need to find ways to circulate all kinds of materials and substances. Industry is increasingly producing materials that mix both virgin fossil feedstock and renewable or recycled raw material feedstock. Mass balance can be applied to plastics to make it possible to track the amount of renewable and recycled materials in the value chain\, and attribute it. These can help to accelerate the transition to a bioeconomy and circular economy. \nJoin us for an insightful sharing session with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) organisation\, an independent multi-stakeholder initiative and leading third certification system supporting sustainable\, fully traceable\, deforestation free and climate-friendly supply chains\, to learn about mass balance approach.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Solutions Shaping the Construction Industry
DESCRIPTION:In line with Singapore’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions\, the construction and materials sector is stepping up to play its part. \nThe objective of this panel discussion is to facilitate a collaborative dialogue on practical solutions and innovative approaches to advance sustainable construction practices\, aligning with Singapore’s broader sustainability goals. \nThe recent regulation from SGX recommends that climate reporting should be mandatory for all large companies. If implemented\, these will have an impact across the extensive supply chain that constitutes the built environment sector. \nTo discuss these issues and share her views on ESG reporting in the built environment sector\, we are privileged to have Ms Esther An\, Chief Sustainability Officer of City Developments Limited (CDL) and Committee Chair of the Singapore Reporting Advisory Council (SRAC). Ms An will elucidate CDL’s steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability\, as evidenced by its annual publication of the Integrated Sustainability Report. She will also share the implications that regulations are expected to have for the built environment sector and its supply chain. \nThe exchange of perspectives will also touch upon what general contractors and other industry participants are currently doing in the field of sustainability.

SUMMARY:The Energy Transition in Singapore – Way Forward & Financing a More Sustainable Power Sector
DESCRIPTION:The power sector in Singapore accounts for about 40% of the country’s carbon emissions. In light of Singapore’s 2050 Net Zero Target\, reducing the power sector’s emissions will be critical to achieve this goal. However\, this does not come without challenges. Singapore will still need to maintain a secure\, reliable and sustainable power system in an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical environment. Additionally\, mobilising around $3.5 trillion a year of capital investment to achieve a net-zero economy between now and 2050 won’t come without its risks.

SUMMARY:Embedding Reduction of E-Waste in the Manufacturing Process: Harvesting for Reuse
DESCRIPTION:The escalating annual generation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste) in the European Union (EU) and Singapore has emerged as a critical concern\, representing one of the fastest-growing waste streams. This category encompasses a diverse array of devices\, ranging from mobile phones\, computers\, and televisions to medical devices and photovoltaic panels. \nE-waste\, characterised by a complex mixture of materials\, including hazardous substances\, poses substantial environmental and health risks. Furthermore\, contemporary electronics harbour rare and expensive resources\, including critical raw materials\, which could be salvaged through efficient recycling and re-use practices. \nThis panel discussion seeks to underscore the urgency of enhancing the collection\, treatment\, and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment at the end of their life cycle\, aligning with the overarching goal of transitioning towards a circular economy. \nIn Singapore\, the National Environment Agency (NEA) enforces e-waste management guided by the Resource Sustainability Act (RSA). ALBA E-waste Smart Recycling Pte Ltd is the designated Producer Responsibility Scheme (PRS) Operator\, overseeing consumer Electronic and Electrical Equipment (EEE) waste. Regulations such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive)\, also in the EU\, mandate the separate collection and proper treatment of e-waste\, prescribing targets for its collection\, recovery\, and recycling. \nDuring this event\, participants will gain insights into e-waste management regulations from Singapore’s leading authorities in the field. The event offers a unique platform for attendees to hear firsthand from companies actively addressing the e-waste challenge. Furthermore\, it serves as a forum to explore opportunities and strategies for increasing proper disposal practices.
