Diplomatic Network (Asia)’s October networking event brought together diplomats and business leaders for a lively discussion on recent global elections and their potential impact on international relations and investment opportunities.
In the past 12 months, several nations have held national elections, with many producing intriguing outcomes. DNA invited the heads of mission from two of these countries to its monthly networking lunch, offering the diplomats a platform to share insights with DNA’s members about the election results and their potential impact on the future of both nations.
The lunch was held on Tuesday at Nobu, the renowned fusion restaurant nestled within the Four Seasons Singapore, a DNA member, located on Orchard Boulevard. The elegant venue provided the perfect setting for this important gathering.
Global elections
The distinguished guests of honor were His Excellency Mauricio Nine, the ambassador of Argentina, and Her Excellency Charlotte Lobe, the high commissioner of South Africa to Singapore.
These two Southern Hemisphere diplomats discussed the recent electoral processes in their respective countries, reminding everyone that both nations offer much more to the world than just renowned beef and wine.
Argentina’s most recent presidential election, held in October 2023, resulted in a win for right-wing candidate Javier Milei of the Libertarian Party. After years of socialist-leaning Peronism, the country made what many consider a dramatic shift to the right.
Ambassador Nine expressed hope for Argentina’s future, emphasizing Milei’s administration’s ambitious economic and socio-political reforms aimed at modernizing the country. He also encouraged DNA members to explore Argentina as a promising investment destination.
High Commissioner Lobe provided insights into South Africa’s May 2024 elections, which marked a significant moment after three decades of African National Congress dominance. With no party securing a parliamentary majority, a government of national unity was formed. She praised South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s negotiation skills, noting his key role in South Africa’s peaceful transition from apartheid in the 1990s, and highlighted the ongoing challenges the country faces in achieving the vision of freedom fighters like Mandela, Sisulu, and Tambo.
Lobe assured attendees that South Africa is open for business and is far more than just a safari destination. She proudly reflected on her role in fostering connections between South Africa and Singapore’s business and cultural communities.
