The first Diplomatic Network (Asia) lunch of the year celebrated the spirit of the Lunar New Year with a traditional lo hei ritual, symbolizing unity and prosperity.
DNA’s special Chinese New Year networking event, hosted on Tuesday, brought together a slew of diplomats and members of the business community at Hai Tien Lo restaurant in hotel Pan Pacific Singapore.
Sharing traditions among guests
Among the distinguished attendees were ambassadors from Brazil, China, Egypt, and Turkey, alongside DNA Director Tay Wan Leng, insurance advisor Heny Chen, Oaks Legal’s Soo Chye Lee, who chaired the meeting, and Misizwe Mtshali of SA Wine Cellar. The event set the tone for a prosperous year ahead, blending cultural appreciation with good chats around the table.
Lo hei is a cherished tradition during Lunar New Year, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia. It involves a communal salad dish called yu sheng, which is made of raw fish, shredded vegetables, and various condiments symbolizing prosperity, health, and good fortune.
Participants gather around the table and use chopsticks to toss the ingredients together while enthusiastically calling out auspicious phrases.
Guests shared stories of family traditions, reflecting on the deeply rooted custom of reuniting with loved ones during this festive season. A lively discussion followed, exploring the evolving importance of family across generations.
