Diplomats and business executives gathered for a May 2025 networking lunch hosted by Diplomatic Network (Asia) at Lawry’s Prime Rib on the 27th of May in Orchard Road.

The event was attended by two guests of honour: High Commissioner of South Africa Her Excellency Charlotte Lobe, and Ambassador of Japan HE Hiroshi Ishikawa.

The lunch was led by DNA executive member Soo Chye Lee, who encouraged a lively conversation over many topical issues. Also in attendance were Chris Chuang of Performance Motors, Dinesh Naidoo of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Clarice Tan of Oaks Legal.

A Changing Singapore

The lunch saw a discussion about the economy, culture and quality of life in Singapore. Notably, Singapore has been ranked as one of the happiest nations in Asia despite frequent debates over the governance of cars and houses through COE and stamp duties.

It was stated that 50% of Singaporean cars are running on EV batteries, reflecting a significant change in consumer and sales patterns in the local automobile industry.

Additionally, the topic of Singaporean hawker culture, recognised by UNESCO as a nationally significant ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’, was brought up by the guests as one of the best ways to experience Singapore. In particular, local coffee shops were praised alongside larger hawker centres such as Satay by the Bay.

Expo 2025

Additionally, Expo 2025, currently held in Osaka, was discussed by the guests as a significant reflection of global unity and cultural exchange.

Of particular interest were two highly praised pavilions. Italy’s pavilion at Osaka has emerged as one of the most popular attractions. Additionally, Singapore’s pavilion, with its assortment of local dishes such as satay and laksa, has been chosen as a favourite by Japanese Princess Aiko in a pleasant surprise.

In a changing global political climate, DNA’s guests agreed that Expo 2025 was worthy of celebration of mutual cooperation, and a return to form for the historically significant tradition of the world’s fair.
