For many people around the world, Colombia is instantly recognisable through global pop sensation Shakira, whose music has introduced millions to the country’s vibrant sounds. Beyond this international icon, Colombia is also a nation rich in history, cultural diversity, breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality.
Every year on 20 July, Colombians celebrate Independence Day, commemorating the beginning of the country’s journey towards independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1810. More than a national holiday, it is a celebration of freedom, national identity and the shared heritage that continues to unite the Colombian people.
A Day of National Celebration
Across the country, Independence Day is marked by military parades, concerts, traditional dance performances, cultural festivals and community gatherings. Streets are decorated in the colours of the national flag as families and friends come together to celebrate Colombia’s history, culture and achievements.
As Shakira’s international success has demonstrated, music plays a central role in Colombian cultural life and Independence Day festivities. Folk rhythms such as cumbia, vallenato, salsa and bambuco can be heard throughout the celebrations, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage.
Traditional dishes, including arepas, empanadas, bandeja paisa and ajiaco, are also shared as part of the festivities.
Celebrating Colombia Around the World
The celebrations extend far beyond Colombia’s borders. Each year, Colombian embassies and consulates host National Day receptions and cultural events that bring together diplomats, government representatives, members of the Colombian diaspora and local communities.
One of the largest overseas celebrations is the Festival Independencia Orgullo Colombiano (FIOC) in New York City, where Colombian culture is showcased through music, dance, gastronomy and community activities. The festival reflects the pride and strong sense of identity shared by Colombians living abroad.
