Sentosa’s 10-week-long Food Fest kicked off on Friday with its first event, Sentosa’s GrillFest, at Siloso Beach in Singapore. 

The Sentosa Food Fest consists of three events – GrillFest, Restaurant Trail and Food Truck Fiesta – spread over July, August and September.

Flavours from around the globe

GrillFest boasts more than 30 stalls displaying a range of meats cooked over charcoal and wood fires. The event runs until July 30.  

The food extravaganza feature cuisines from Egypt, Korea, Mexico and South Africa, as well as the likes of local Singaporean food. This year stalls will be vying for the GrillFest People’s Choice Award, giving the event a competitive edge.

GrillFest’s diplomatic guests of honour

The guests of honour included members of the foreign diplomatic community stationed in Singapore, executives of Sentosa Development Corp, and representatives of local media that were covering the event. 

More specifically, attendees included the ambassador of Cambodia, His Excellency Sok Khoeun;  Costa Rican ambassador, HE Victor Rojas; the ambassador of Peru, HE Carlos Vasquez; the ambassador of El Salvador, HE Alfonso Valencia; the ambassador of Saudi Arabia, HE Abdullah M. AlMadhi; the high commissioner of South Africa, HE Charlotte Lobe; the Egyptian charge d’affaires, Honorable Mohamed Maamoun; and the first secretary of Rwanda, Honourable Ornelia Kayitesi. Also present were Sentosa Development Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Thien Kwee En and SDC’s Chairman, Bob Tan.

They were joined by their families. The grilled food was paired with a variety of drinks as well as music, creating a communal, family-like atmosphere. 

South African touch

South African High Commissioner Charlotte Lobe highlighted that it was the first time her country was showcased at the event, with a traditional “Shisanyama” stall. Chef Tiyani Chauke, who flew all the way from Cape Town, indulged the Singaporean crowd and tourists with his secret South African recipes. 

“Shisanyama” is the Zulu word for burning meat, which refers to how the meat is prepared over hot coals.
